More than 30 Barking & Dagenham College performers – and their tutor – are dancing with joy after landing the chance to perform to a billion people.

The students, from the college’s school of performing arts and technical theatre, are set to take part in the Opening Ceremony for the Olympic Games.

Head of performing arts Mark Civil is also getting in on the act. He will help produce and arrange the medal presentations at three venues in the capital.

Thomas Kirby is one of the lucky students working with Opening Ceremony director Danny Boyle, of Slumdog Millionaire fame.

“So far, we’ve been rehearsing a dance once a week for two months,” said Thomas.

“We’re working with a large group of people, so it’s been a great team-building exercise.

“The opportunity has given me lots of confidence. I’m really into acting but had never danced until now. I now know I can do it, and this will help my future career. I feel like I’ve really achieved something big.”
