Welcome to the Barking and Dagenham Council

The Council serves a population of over 164,000 people. The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council is in east London, on the north bank of the River Thames, and within the M25 London Orbital Motorway.

The neighbouring London Borough Councils are Newham, to the west, Redbridge, to the north and Havering, to the east.

The Barking and Dagenham Council runs services including education, social housing, local environmental services, Adult and Community Services, building planning, and housing benefits. The Council also works with a number of local and national organisations to tackle issues such as crime, poverty, discrimination and social inclusion.

In the last 20 years Barking and Dagenham have gone through some very exciting radical changes. It has become more diverse: the proportion of people from ethnic minorities is set to grow from 16% to 25%.

New communities have formed alongside existing communities and we now have between 3,500 to 5,000 people either seeking refuge or asylum living in the borough. There is also great stability with two-thirds of the community having lived here for more than 20 years. The generations are well represented with a growth in younger people counterbalanced by significant mature population with over a quarter of the residents aged over 50. There has also been a large improvement in attainment in school-based education in recent years within the borough.

Ask a friend for help

We are committed to providing interpreting services to our residents who cannot speak or read English. However, we recommend that you always try to find a friend or relative who can speak or read English to help you with your enquiry initially. It will help both us and yourself to deal with your needs more effectively.
