Barking New Town - goodbye fishing, hello factories!

Bottle from R Whites factory, Barking
This gallery explores how, from the 1860s onwards, Barking was transformed from a fishing and farming community into the base for a huge range of industries which attracted workers from all over the British Isles. It also looks at the expansion of housing needed to accommodate the increase in population.

In 1931 Barking became a Municipal Borough with greater powers of self-government and its own Mayor, whose robe and chain of office are displayed.
This room also holds the Royal Arms of Queen Elizabeth I. For centuries they were proudly displayed for centuries on a wall on the upper floor of Barking Court House (also known as the Market House). Queen Elizabeth paid for the construction of the Court House in 1567, and it was demolished in 1923.

Also on show in this room is a lifebelt manufactured by Fosbery of Barking, which supplied lifebelts and lifejackets to the ill-fated RMS Titanic.
