Class descriptions

Our aerobics programme includes traditional aerobics classes as well as water-based classes and body training sessions.

Body balance
This class combines Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates with new dynamic exercises. It is designed to help you reduce stress, pain and help you live more healthily.

Shape and tone
This class targets specific areas using toning exercises and aerobic work to shift those extra pounds and keep your heart healthy.

Body basics
With no complicated moves and routines, this mostly involves toning work which concentrates on the lower half of the body.

Aqua aerobics
The resistance of the water helps to strengthen your heart and lungs as well as toning your muscles. The class is set to music to make it fun and the water protects your joints and muscles against injury.

Yoga
Yoga offers an alternative approach to using exercise to improve the mind, body and spirit. Yoga helps to improve posture, flexibility and breathing, and releases stress and tension.

Hi-low aerobics mix
This class is designed to burn off those calories using low impact moves alongside more traditional moves. A great fat burner and not really suitable for those exercising for the first time.

Body pump
This dynamic class moves the gym into the studio. Body pump is a non-impact, resistance training workout that uses barbells and adjustable weight. The class will tone and condition your body, can help you to lose weight, and ultimately change the shape of your body, all in record time.

Body step
The traditional step class has been refreshed. We now have Body step which in the ultimate step workout, and the world's fastest way to tone butts and thighs. Activities are simple enough for men and women of all ages and fitness abilities. You can control how hard you work by increasing or decreasing the level of your step and/or the range of movement. Set to exciting and inspirational music body step really is an enjoyable way to get fit.

Boxing circuit
This workout is ideal for anyone who is already fit. It is challenging both physically and mentally.

Starting exercise
With the exception of the advanced classes, all classes are suitable for both beginners and the more experienced participants, but if you new to exercise it is always best to check with your GP before starting any new activity. Similarly if you have any medical conditions, recent injuries, or if you are pregnant please inform the instructor before the class starts. This will enable the instructor to offer alternative exercises appropriate to your activity level.

What to wear

Loose clothing such as a T-shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottom. Please ensure that you wear training shoes that are appropriate for activity that you are participating in.

Your instructors

Every instructor at Abbey Sports Centre is fully qualified, holding a Royal Society of Arts Exercise to Music Certificate or equivalent. Some of the instructors have further specialist qualifications such as Pre and Post Natal, and Older Pensions. Instructors also undergo regular training sessions to ensure that the standard of instruction remains at a high standard.

If you have a special condition that you are concerned about, please ask either the staff at Abbey Sports Centre, or your instructor who will refer you to an appropriate instructor.

  • Specifically for our 50+ customers this is an activity session incorporating a number of activities for an all inclusive price.

    Designed for all levels of experience this session is ideal for meeting and making new friends.

    Time
    Tuesday, 10am - 12pm
    Friday, 10.15am - 12.15pm

    The session starts each week with a group stretch and tone session run by one of our experienced coaches.

    Whilst it is not essential to participate in this session, it is an enjoyable way of warming up before commencing your exercise and a great way of meeting other 'Elderberries'.

    For the remainder of the session you can then participate in a number of different activities. These include:

    • Badminton
    • Squash
    • Weight training
    • Swimming

    Please note: Activity availability may alter during school holidays

    Weight training
    Customers cannot usually use our Fitness Studio facilities without first completing an Induction Course.

    However, during this session our qualified coach supervises this area meaning that Elderberries can use our weight training and cardiovascular equipment.

    Swimming
    Elderberries may use the swimming pool after the session between 12pm - 12.45pm.

    Please note: The pool is also open to the general public at this time and is not set aside specifically for our Elderberry customers.

    Elderberries badminton
    Want to concentrate on your badminton game? Why not meet with other like minded Elderberries. Wednesday morning, 10am - 12pm.

     
  • Fit for life is a prescription for exercise that comes from your GP. It is open to eligible residents of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

    Exercise has proved to be a valuable way to prevent disease and improve the state of our health. At fit for life we have prescribed exercises for people who have a variety of illnesses and conditions such as:

    • Obesity
    • Non-insulin dependent diabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • Very inactive elderly
    • Heart problems
    • Asthmatics
    • Arthritis
    • Minor injury recovery

    If you fit the bill, you may be eligible to join us. Ask your GP if he or she feels that you would benefit from exercise.

    Alternatively, you may telephone us at fit for life for an informal chat with a member of staff to get more information.

    Fit for life offers an opportunity to exercise in a welcoming, helpful environment.

  • Description and costs for fitness programmes.

    Group induction
    A maximum of 4 people are shown how to use the fitness studio equipment safely, after filling in a health questionnaire. These are at set times (maximum 1 hour).

    Flexible induction
    A maximum of 1 people are shown how to use the fitness studio equipment safely after filling in a health questionnaire. These can be arranged at a suitable time for the customer(s) (maximum 1 hour).

    Personal programme
    After a blood pressure check, an exercise regime is designed to meet the needs of the customer, and recorded on a programme card for the customer to follow. Exercise techniques from the programme are then demonstrated in the fitness studio (maximum 1 hour).

    Personal training
    The purpose of these gym or studio based exercise sessions is to focus and motivate customers. The individualised supervision will boost confidence through improved fitness knowledge.

    These sessions will encourage consistency and help to attain personal goals in the shortest possible time. These sessions can be done one to one or with a maximum of 2 friends or family.

    Induction courses
    Before using the Fitness Studio, an induction course must be taken. This session consists of up to an hours instruction with one of our fully trained instructors.

    You will be taught how to use each piece of equipment safely and offered advice on suitable training methods.

    Induction courses must be booked and paid for in advance.

    Following your induction you will be issued with a Users Card. This must be produced on every occasion you wish to use the Fitness Studio. Failure to do so will result in admission being refused.

    Additional induction courses may run during peak seasons. Please enquire at Reception.

    Please note: The Fitness Studio is closed at the following times:

    To use the Fitness Studio you must be aged 16 years or over.

    Personalised programmes
    Whether you have a specific goal in mind or are in need of a little additional help before commencing your training, a personal programme is to be recommended.

    A 60 minute session spent with one of our qualified instructors will result in a 10 week personal programme designed specifically with your individual needs in mind.

  • Kokoro Kai Ju-Jitsu Association

    Is Ju-Jitsu for me?

    The style does not rely on aggression nor on brute force; our techniques displace and use the force and energy of the attacker.

    Therefore, Ju-Jitsu is for everyone - young or not so young, regardless of gender of physical build, and has the best application in self defence.

    As long as you are over 6 years old, with no serious illness or condition which makes it difficult for you to take part in physical activity, you can learn Ju-Jitsu.

  • The centre has a multi purpose sports hall which is available for hire for a number of different activities.

    Badminton courts
    Courts are available to book in 30 minute or 60 minute sessions subject to availability.

    Courts can generally be booked from 8am - 10.30pm each day, except Saturdays and Sundays - last court 5.30pm.

    Centre members can book courts up to 7 days in advance, by telephone and pay on arrival.

    Please note: 48 hours notice of cancellation is required. Full court fee is charged for all late cancellations.

    Non-members can book up to 48 hours in advance but must be in the Centre to make a booking. Payment must be made at time of booking.

     
  • Whether you are a complete beginner or of a higher standard our squash programme offers something for everyone.

    We have 2 squash courts at Abbey Sports Centre. Both are glass back courts.

    Squash courts can generally be booked from 9.30am - 10.10pm each day, except Saturdays and Sundays - last court 4.50pm.

    Courts are available to book in 40 minute sessions subject to availability.

    Centre members can book courts up to 7 days in advance, by telephone and pay on arrival.

    Please note: 48 hours notice of cancellation is required. Full court fee is charged for all late cancellations.

    Non-members can book up to 48 hours in advance but must be in the Centre to make a booking. Payment must be made at time of booking.

  • Please note: From Friday 1 April 2011 free swimming for under 18’s will no longer be available. Therefore from Friday 1 April 2011 normal fees and charges will apply.

    Swimming is an excellent way to keep fit and the pool at this Centre is suitable for all ages and abilities.

    Our pool is a 25 metres x 10 metres conventional swimming pool. It is ideal for experienced and novice swimmers alike with the depth varying from 3 to 5 feet in depth.

    Children under the age of 8 years

    A strict under 8 Supervision Policy is in operation at this pool.

    A responsible adult may supervise up to 2 children under 8 years of age in the pool and associated areas.

    It is recommended that children under 5 years of age wear a suitable buoyancy aid such as arm bands whilst in the pool area.

    Children under 4 to be supervised 1-1.

    Please note: The lifeguard for this session will not always be female.

    Swimming lessons
    Lessons are available for customers of all ages and abilities, swimmers and non-swimmers alike. There are children and adult lessons which run in courses lasting 10 weeks. All classes are 30 minutes long and cover all aspects of water safety such as swimming skills and water confidence skills.

     
  • A limited amount of time is allocated for hire for whole hall activities such as 5-a-side football, basketball and so on.

    Subject to availability the hall can be hired on a contractual or casual basis.
