Looking for work?  Looking to recruit?

Helping you into work

If you are looking for work then this section sets out a wide range of services that can provide you with support, including the Council's Job Shops. Click on the tabs to the left to find out more.

The Council is working with key local partners including Jobcentre Plus, employment and skills providers and employers to help more people into sustainable work. Over the next 10 years Barking and Dagenham Council and its partners aim to stimulate the creation of 10,000 new jobs in the borough and to equip local people with the skills needed to compete for them.

The borough is well connected by transport links to areas with a huge number of jobs, including Canary Wharf and the City, Stratford and the new London Gateway Port development in Thurrock.

Recruitment support for businesses

Businesses can reach the widest number of potential recruits and access bespoke free recruitment advice and support, including for apprenticeships, by contacting the Council's Employment and Skills Team. Whether your business needs a single new recruit or wants to work on a major recruitment exercise the team can provide support.

Retailer Evans, based in Vicarage Field Shopping Centre, wanted helped to recruit a single new retail assistant. Jan Smith, Manager commented: “We were really pleased with the service we received from Barking Job Shop.  You took away the pressure and hard work and delivered a helpful service and communicated with us every step of the way.  We asked and you delivered.”

In October 2012 the team worked to support the opening of a new Premier Inn and Brewers Fayre in Dagenham, leading to almost 60 job offers for borough residents. The employer was supported to hold information sessions, assessment days and interviews in the borough's Barking Learning Centre.  Joe McDiarmid, General Manager for Whitbread commented: “Overall we were extremely impressed with the smooth recruitment process, calibre of candidates and the venue.”
