Environmental protection

The Environmental Protection Team deals with complaints and enquiries relating to all aspects of pollution including air quality and land quality.

Accessing information on permitted activities under Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007

Access to the public register is free and during normal working hours email 3000direct@lbbd.gov.uk for an appointment or request a list of processes held on the register.

We also hold information on Environment Agency-regulated activities operating within our authority's area (as required under regulation 46(4) of Environmental Permitting Regulations).

Air Quality

The team has been leading the review of local air quality that all councils are required to undertake. We have declared an Air Quality Management Area across the borough.

Local Authorities, under the Environmental Protection Act, regulate pollution from industrial processes, for example dry cleaners, waste oil burners and concrete crushers. This team is responsible for pollution prevention and control, permitting industrial processes and undertaking regular inspections.

Land Quality

The team is leading on the Contaminated land strategy, which will ensure that all land in the borough is reviewed to identify and prioritise action on contamination.

Planning applications

Responses to planning applications sent to the department for comment are coordinated by this team who have responsibility for assessing the environmental impact of planning and development proposals.

This section is involved in many strategic projects, for example, the Barking Riverside project, Channel Tunnel Rail Link, A13 realignment, Local Agenda 21 and Environmental Management.

Channel Tunnel Rail Link

Construction work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link has finished in the borough. The Channel Tunnel Rail Link line travels above ground between the borough boundary with Havering and Ripple Lane, where it goes into a tunnel, resurfacing at Stratford.
