Councillor Charles Fairbrass MBE

Born in Stepney in 1935, Charles Fairbrass moved to Dagenham in 1944. He attended William Ford Junior School.

 

He was employed by British Telecom as a Maintenance Manager until his retirement after 37 years of service.

 

Councillor Fairbrass was first elected to the Council in 1971 as a Member for Heath ward, although he had been a co-opted member of the Education Committee prior to that time.

 

Since his first election he has served on various committees. He was Chairman of Education, Vice-Chairman of Social Services and served on Establishment, Planning and Development, General Purposes and Finance Committees.

 

Councillor Fairbrass has represented the Council of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on various school governing bodies, including infant, junior, comprehensive and special schools. He has also served on miscellaneous bodies, including Old People's Welfare Association, of which he was Chairman.

 

He had a long association with the Dagenham Physically Handicapped Association, and was a voluntary ambulance driver for 15 years, taking people to their social clubs and on holidays.

 

Councillor Fairbrass was first elected Mayor of the Borough in 1984, during which time he raised sufficient funds to purchase a Vitalograph machine for the Paediatric section of Oldchurch Hospital.

 

He was Deputy Leader of the Council between 1990 and 1998 and Leader between 1998 and 2009.

 

In 1992 Councillor Fairbrass was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in recognition of the eminent public service rendered by him over many years, including 21 years as a Member of the Council.

 

Councillor Fairbrass was awarded the MBE for services to local government in the Queen's Birthday Honour's List 2008.

 

On his retirement as Leader of the Council in May 2009 he was elected Mayor for the year 2009-10.
