Born in Jagat Pur, a small village in the Punjab, India, Nirmal Singh Gill came to the UK and settled in Barking in 1968.
He attended Newham Technology College and Barking and Dagenham Adult College. He was employed by Telephone Cable Limited and Ford Motor Company Limited, Dagenham, for over 14 years. He has been self-employed in retail business for over 20 years and is dedicated to serving the community.
Councillor Gill was first elected to the Council in 1990 as a Member for Longbridge Ward. He has served on various Committees. He was Vice-Chairman of the Education Committee and a member of the Establishment, General Purposes and Finance Committees.
He has also recently served as a Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Personnel Board and a member of the Licensing and Standards Committees.
Councillor Gill has represented the Council of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on numerous school governing bodies, including Infant, Junior and Comprehensive Schools (including Barking Abbey and Eastbury Comprehensive schools) for over 20 years.
He has also served on miscellaneous bodies, such as the local Racial Equality Council, where he is currently a Vice-President, Council for Voluntary Services, London Valuation Tribunal and the Singh Sabha London East Gurdwara, where he is a long serving member and currently serving as a Secretary.
Councillor Gill is a married man with two children, Rocky and Bindy, both born at the Barking Hospital and educated in local schools.
He has very strong links with his family in India and has received a number of prestigious awards from India including the Mother India International Award, Hind Rattan Award and Village Man Award.
