Councillor Fred Barns

Deputy Mayor

I was born in Dagenham and have lived in Barking and Dagenham all my life. I was educated in the borough at Hunters Hall and Eastbrook schools. I also studied Youth and Community work at Liverpool University.

I am married to Phyllis, we have a son and daughter and 3 grandchildren, they all live and were also educated in the borough.

I worked for Barking and Dagenham Council for 30 years as a youth worker and finally as Principal Youth and Community Officer.

In May 2002 I was elected to the council, to represent Thames ward.

I am Chair of Governors at Barking Abbey School and serve on many of the council's Committees.

I have been a supporter of the Trade Union movement throughout my working life and am Life President of the Barking and Dagenham Youth Football League and Vice President of Barking and Dagenham's Boxing Clubs.

My charity, the National Holiday Fund for sick and disabled children, raised in excess of £38,000.
