The Greater London Authority is a unique form of strategic city wide government for London. It is made up of a directly elected Mayor, the Mayor of London, and a separately elected Assembly, the London Assembly.
The Public Liaison Unit at the Greater London Authority can be contacted on 020 7983 4100.
The first directly elected Mayor of London together with the London Assembly were elected in May 2000. Both the Mayor and the Members of the London Assembly are elected for 4 year terms with the next election due in May 2012. Their role is to promote economic and social development and improve the environment in Greater London.
The Mayor is charged with devising strategies and action plans to tackle London-wide issues. The Assembly provides a check and balance on the Mayor, scrutinises his performance and investigates issues of London-wide significance.
