Scrutiny Panel

Barking and Dagenham Health

Councils have the power to look into local health services on behalf of local residents. The Health Scrutiny Panel has been set up to carry out this work in Barking and Dagenham; it is made up of 5 councillors and meets in public every 6 weeks.

The Panel can look into or 'scrutinise' any matter relating to local health services. This includes:

The Panel is not allowed to consider individual people's cases, but can look into any broader issues arising.

Every year, the Panel carries out in-depth scrutiny reviews on issues of local concern. During a review, it seeks views from service users, service providers and others. It also looks at relevant documents and may visit the services under review.

At the end of a review, the Panel produces a report including recommendations for improvement. The NHS body being reviewed then has 28 days to say what action it will take in response.

Local health services must also consult the Panel on any major service changes. In addition, the Panel keeps a general overview, keeping up to date with local developments and asking questions about current issues where necessary.
