Complaints against Members of the Council

Changes to the complaints procedure

From 8 May 2008 the responsibility for considering complaints that an elected Member of the Council (local councillor) may have breached the Members' Code of Conduct has transferred to the standards committees of local authorities. Previously complaints were sent to the Standards Board for England.

What this means to you

As from 8 May 2008, if you want to complain about the conduct of a Member of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, you should complete the attached form and send it marked Private and Confidential to:

Ms Nina Clark

The Monitoring Officer

London Borough of Barking and Dagenham

Civic Centre

Rainham Road North

Dagenham

RM10 7BN

Email: nina.clark@lbbd.gov.uk|

The Monitoring Officer will refer the complaint to a sub committee of the Council's Standards Committee, who will decide whether the matter is one which should be investigated.

If the sub committee feels that an investigation is not warranted, you will have a right for that decision to be reviewed by a different sub committee of the Standards Committee.

Where investigation is found to be warranted, the Monitoring Officer will arrange for a full investigation and this will subsequently be reported to and determined by a sub committee of the Standards Committee.

The Standards Committee can only deal with complaints about the behaviour of a Member. It will not deal with complaints about things that are not covered by the Members' Code of Conduct. If you make a complaint it must be about why you think a Member has not followed the Code of Conduct.

If you would like further assistance or would like the information on audio or in enlarged print, please contact Margaret Freeman on 020 8227 2134. You can also email her at margaret.freeman@lbbd.gov.uk.
