Curriculum development

The team are currently working on minimum standards for all year groups across all 6 activity areas. They will start with early years and end with GCSE PE. This advice has been closely linked to the National Curriculum 2000 and will be available from January 2000 for all schools.

All Key Stage 1 and 2 schools are now involved in the Youth Sport Trust Top Play and British Telecom Top Sport programmes. The vast majority of teachers in the borough have been trained to use these quality resources to support the games programme in schools. Training will be available in the Autumn term for teachers new to the borough or for those who missed the initial training, please see the inset booklet for more information.

The first phase of schools for Top Outdoors are in the process of being trained by Lesley Montague and we hope more schools will become involved over the next 3 years. Top Dance co-written by Bobbie Gargrave is being piloted in a number of schools this term and we hope more schools will become involved after the national launch in April 2000, contact Bobbie Gargrave if you are interested.

Over 80 nursery colleagues attended training in April for Top Start, we are working closely with the early years' team to develop a quality physical development curriculum for the early years, please contact Bobbie if you require further information.

Barking Abbey Sports College has just completed its 2nd year and was 1 of only 3 colleges noted for its good progress by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. The PE team are working closely with the college and other borough centres of good practice to help develop and disseminate good practice.

A new boys' dance group has been established at the college led by Haley Dumbrill and supported by a number of professional organisations. If you have any boys in your school with an interest in performing in a dance group please contact Haley at Barking Abbey.

We hold termly after school meetings for those responsible for the physical education programme in schools. The 2nd Monday of each term is for secondary specialists, the 2nd Thursday is for primary coordinators, the 3rd Wednesday for the dance forum and there is also an outdoor education interest group who meet termly.

We have an extensive primary and secondary inset programme and we welcome colleagues from outside the borough along with those from within.

Curriculum online

We will be developing this aspect of our work over the next 2 years. We will publish the 2 studies recently undertaken by Doctor Sue Lyons on 'Girls and Boys Attitudes to Physical Education and Sport' on the intranet. We will also publish the PE minimum standards once they are completed.

Fiona and Liz are working on support materials for GCSE and A Level PE for teachers and revision notes for students.

You can also access information about outdoor pursuits courses at Trewern Centre, the borough's residential outdoor centre in Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire.
