Sports Development

Community Health and Sports Programme

The aim of sports development is to provide the community of Barking and Dagenham with low cost, quality sporting opportunities and to promote healthy living within our borough.

Through working in partnership with a variety of agencies, sports development is able to bring both sports and fitness activities to the community at a wide range of venues such as sports centres, community halls, care homes, parks and open spaces, schools and private sports clubs.

Although sports development primarily works with the following target group: young people (8-14), young adults (15-24), unemployed people, women, disabled people, 50+ and people form black and minority ethnic groups, this does not mean that our service is exclusive to these groups.

Sports development aims to provide life long opportunities to the whole of the community.

Community health

The community health programme is a joint title for the variety of health and fitness based activities organised by the Sports Development Unit. Our main aim through these programmes is to encourage people to participate in some form of physical activity on a regular basis and to maintain participation throughout their life. Activities in this programme include yoga, pilates and our Health Walk Programme.
