Tufted Duck - a common diving duck. The males have black and white plumage and have a tuft on the back of the head. Other wildfowl can be seen around the lake area.
Holm Oak - Most oak lose their leaves in winter but Holm Oak is one of the evergreen species. Its leaves are spiky when young and this gives the tree its names; Holm and Ilex, both mean holly. It is situated near the car park/lake area and is several years old.
Birds - great tits, blue tits and finches can be seen in the garden are of the museum.
Walking can help to improve overall fitness.
Valence house is the only manor house left in Dagenham, the building dates from the 15th century. Today the house incorporates the borough's museum and art gallery.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday, 10am - 4.30pm, and Saturday, 10am - 4pm.
Buses: 5, 62, 128, 173, 174 or 364 stop nearby.
Train: Chadwell Heath Station then a 62 bus along Valence Avenue to the junction of Becontree Avenue.
From Becontree Avenue enter the drive towards Valence House and walk through the car park towards the gate. Enter the park and turn immediately right and walk along the path.
When the path finishes turn left and walk along the fence line where you meet a path; turn left onto it and continue to the landscaped roundabout. Walk around it and along the path opposite back to the gate.
Exit the park and walk through the car park again towards the lake. Cross the road and walk towards your right and enter the gate onto the lakeside.
Walk round the lake and exit through a gate by Valence House. Enter the house and walk through enjoying the history and the herb garden at the back.
A café is available to purchase refreshments and a souvenir shop to purchase items of local interest.
Exit the house and make your way back to Becontree Avenue.
