What can we all do to clean up our streets?

Don't drop it

The simple message is 'bin it'. If you drop litter you could get fined. The law allows us to give on the spot fines of £75 to anyone we see dropping litter.

Report it

Don't put up with litter, report it!. Make a service request to Barking and Dagenham Direct. Every street in Barking and Dagenham is swept or inspected every week.

Prosecutions and on the spot fines

Our Street Wardens have the power to issue £75 on the spot fines to anyone dropping litter, spraying graffiti, putting up fly posters or allowing their dog to foul. This includes things that many people think are insignificant, like cigarette ends and apple cores. The maximum fine for littering is £2,500.

We are working with businesses to encourage a responsible attitude to preventing littering, and where necessary, imposing requirements on businesses to make sure their premises and surrounding areas are kept free of rubbish. Find out more about the Street Warden Service.

What we will do to help

We inspect and/or clean every road in the borough at least once a week
In busy areas such as shopping centres, we provide additional cleansing
In the Town Centre there are permanent cleansing staff solely responsible for continuous cleaning
We will remove fly tips on Council land within 24 hours of them being reported
We will empty litter bins on a daily basis and help with your community organised clean-ups
