We are working to protect the environment and make Barking and Dagenham 'Cleaner, Greener and Safer'.

To improve the appearance of our streets and open spaces, we need to tackle environmental crimes such as graffiti and litter.

What is the anti-graffiti charter?

We set up the Barking and Dagenham anti-graffiti charter with our partners and local businesses. It is an agreement that explains how we work together to remove graffiti and make the borough a safe and welcoming place for people to live, work and visit.

This charter focuses on keeping the borough free from graffiti and describes both our and your responsibilities.

The charter will also recognise and promote people or organisations that help to raise public awareness of how to tackle the problem of graffiti.

What are the benefits of the charter?

If you ask us to, we will remove graffiti for you at a reduced price (terms and conditions apply). We will also apply anti-graffiti wall coatings to your business properties at a reduced price.

We will give you certificates that recognise you and your business for promoting and working towards a borough that is free from graffiti.

We will give you advice about how to remove and prevent graffiti.

How do I sign up to the charter?

If you are the registered owner of the company, please phone us on 020 8215 3010 so we can arrange for one of our street wardens or the graffiti service to visit you.

Terms of the Barking and Dagenham anti-graffiti charter

Helping to make Barking and Dagenham 'Cleaner, Greener and Safer' The terms of this charter set out both our and your responsibilities.

You must do the following:

Do all you reasonably can to keep your business property free from graffiti
Help us and the Metropolitan Police prosecute graffiti vandals
Provide us with contact details for a member of your organisation so we can let them know if we find graffiti on your property
Remove racist and offensive graffiti from your property within one working day of when you find it or when we tell you about it
Arrange to remove all other kinds of graffiti from your property within 3 working days of when you find it or when we tell you about it. If you don't remove the graffiti during this time, you must agree to pay us to do it for you

We will do the following:

Remove graffiti from your property at a reduced price if you have not removed it within the time limits we describe above
Publicise the work that we and businesses do to remove graffiti in the Citizen, the local press and at relevant council events
Organise a yearly event to discuss issues and improvements to keep the borough free of graffiti
Give you the name of one of our representatives to contact if you need to

We will do all this in line with the Antisocial Behaviour Act 2003 and the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.
