As a cyclist it is vital you know how to maintain your bike to avoid any unnecessary accidents.

Make sure that

You chose the right size of bicycle for comfort and safety
Lights and reflectors are kept in good working order
Tyres are in good condition and inflated to the pressure shown on the tyre
Gears are working correctly
The chain is properly adjusted and oiled
The saddle and handlebars are adjusted to the correct heights

You must

Ensure your brakes are efficient - clean them, if necessary, oil the brakes assemblies, brake cables, gear cables and pedals
At nights, use lit front and rear lights and have an efficient rear reflector

Routine maintenance can be dealt with at home with the use of a handbook. However, some jobs are best left to the experts so arrange for big or difficult jobs to be done by a professional.
