Street Care is responsible for treating roads during adverse weather conditions.
We try to maintain footways and carriageways in a safe condition in periods of severe weather. This treatment involves 1 or more of the following:
We have only finite resources and cannot treat all the roads at the same time. Roads are prioritised for treatment. The highest priority being assigned to main roads, public transport access routes, access to hospitals and well-trafficked hills. A much lower priority would be assigned to a residential cul-de-sac.
During periods of severe weather we are flooded with calls from residents asking for their roads to be cleared. Unfortunately due to resource constraints not all requests can be met.
There is a priority list for clearing snow from roads in the borough and for gritting in icy conditions. Once when these have been dealt with, the remaining roads are treated.
Britain's weather is notoriously unpredictable, especially during the winter months. Weather forecasts from the London Weather Centre and our computerised ice prediction system are regularly monitored.
On a typical frosty morning, gritting operations begin at 4.30am and by 7am nearly 200 miles of major roads in the borough will have been treated.
We have a reputation for delivering a highly efficient Winter Maintenance Service.
