Untaxed Vehicles

As part of their duties the 3 Abandoned Vehicle Enforcement Officers inspect 'nuisance' vehicles that are reported to them by the public, or that they come across on their daily patrols. If a vehicle is found to be untaxed it is their responsibility to seek authority from the DVLA to have the vehicle removed or alternatively report it for prosecution.

Tackling untaxed vehicles was part of 'operation scrap it' which was a year long scheme run by the Association of London Government which ended in September 2005. We have decided to continue this scheme to at least the end of March 2006.

What we will do:

We will inspect nuisance vehicles within 24 hours of us being notified
When an untaxed vehicle has been identified and authority has been received from the DVLA to remove, the vehicle is taken to the compound
We will release the vehicle once a payment has been made, the fee to release the vehicle are as follows:
- Within 48 hours £80 and £120 Surety or a valid tax disc
- After 48 hours £160 and £120 Surety or a valid tax disc
- Storage £15 per day
We will refund the surety fee if a valid disc is produced at the vehicle pound or a DVLA local office within 14 days of the release of the vehicle
We will accept payment by cash or postal order

What we would ask of you:

If you know of a vehicle that is untaxed you can report it to Barking and Dagenham Direct or use the nuisance vehicle report form
Alternatively you can contact the DVLA
Please do not abandon your vehicle. If you would like to surrender it, contact Barking and Dagenham Direct and we can arrange for it to be disposed of at no charge to you

New car tax rules

Registered keepers will be legally responsible at all times for making sure they have a valid tax disc. They will be liable for penalties and fines if the vehicle is untaxed, dumped or caught up in any criminal activity (automatic penalty of £80 if vehicle is not taxed in time - without any need to see the vehicle - and £1,000 if taken to court)
Responsibility for that vehicle will remain with the registered keeper until the DVLA is notified that the vehicle has been scrapped, sold, stolen or exported, or unless a Statutory Off Road Notification has been declared. Once the DVLA has been notified, they will issue a letter of acknowledgement, which should be kept as proof that the vehicle record has changed
