Thank you for visiting our website. There have been some important changes to our Clinical Waste Collection Service. We have been advised by the Government Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the NHS Primary Care Trust that there are two categories of Healthcare Waste:
The NHS Primary Care Trust policy states, where a healthcare worker (i.e. District Nurse or Clinical Practitioner), produces clinical waste as a result of health care provision in the home, this waste is classified as Clinical Waste. In these cases, the NHS Trust is deemed to be the producer and has a duty of care to ensure its safe disposal.
Clinical Waste includes items such as Hypodermic Needles, Dressings or Dialysis Waste. Under no circumstances should these items be disposed with your Household Waste.
If you do not receive home visits from a District Nurse and need to dispose Clinical Waste, please contact the NHS Primary Care Trust on 020 8591 9595 or ask your GP/ Nurse to make a referral on your behalf to the Primary Care Trust. The Primary Care Trust will carry out an assessment and if you meet their criteria, they will make arrangements to collect your Clinical Waste.
If you do not meet the Primary Care Trust Criteria, then you will need to make your own arrangements and contact a Clinical Waste Company. Details are available from Barking and Dagenham Direct on 020 8215 3000.
The NHS Primary Care Trust and Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs states 'If the items listed below, are produced in the normal home environment, where there is no Health Care Involvement, (i.e. no medical treatment or home visits from a District Nurse), these items would not be classified as Clinical Waste but classified as Non-Infectious Healthcare Waste'. These items are:
If you need to dispose any Non-Infectious Healthcare waste such as Incontinence Pads or Colostomy Bags, please contact the Primary Care Trust on 020 8591 9595 or ask your GP/Health Centre to refer you to the Primary Care Trust. The Primary Care Trust will carry out an assessment. If you meet the Primary Care Trust's criteria, they will contact you to make arrangements for collection.
If you are not receiving any Medical Treatment and have been advised that you do not meet the Primary Care Trust's criteria for collections, you can dispose the Non-Infectious Healthcare Waste items listed above, with your Household Waste, providing that proper care is exercised. There is no need to use a yellow bag. Please ensure that you:
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Primary Care Trust advised that if a large volume of waste is produced (i.e. over 5kg or more than one standard disposal bag per week), then you need to make arrangements for a Private Clinical Waste Collection Company to collect these items.
Further details are available from Barking and Dagenham Direct on 020 8215 3000.
