A listed building is a building, object or structure that has been judged to be of national historical or architectural interest.
Listed Buildings are included on a register called the 'List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest', drawn up by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
English Heritage act as administrators on behalf of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in relation to listed buildings.
Barking and Dagenham now has 42 listed buildings and structures on the statutory list:
The Statutory Listed Buildings (

The borough also has a local list of 129 buildings of local architectural or historic interest. The Local List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham (
PDF 3.28M) was reviewed and adopted in April 2009 and has been updated to remove the Eastbrook Pub, the Baptist Tabernacle and the Chadwell Heath Cemetary Chapel.
The conservation areas in Barking and Dagenham were also reviewed at the same time.
In the Act any object or structure fixed to the building and any object or structure within the curtilage of the building, which although not fixed to the building, forms part of the land and has done so since before 1 July 1948 are also treated as part of the listed building.
