The Species Action Plans|
House sparrows
Our aims
- Investigate house sparrow populations in the borough
- Information and awareness on the bird's importance as a cultural emblem to Londoners
Introduction
- The house sparrow was chosen as an action plan as the public identified with them. At one time they were one of the common birds in London. They are also in dramatic decline identified by the London Natural History Society
Current status
- The house sparrow is not protected under legislation
- The populations in Barking and Dagenham are unknown
Specific factors affecting the species
- Decline in habitats such as wasteland and brownfield sites and garden land
- Changes in roof design may be an issue in some areas where older housing is undergoing renovation since modern roof repairs tend to prevent bird access to roof spaces
- Increase in predator species such as the sparrow hawk and magpie
