Deaths - Mortuary service

The Mortuary handles deaths that have been referred to the Coroner or deaths where no death certificate can be issued.

We do not have a public mortuary in the borough. Residents who die under suspicious circumstances would be directed by the coroners' office to 1 of 3 neighbouring mortuaries these being either:

King George Hospital (NHS Hospital mortuary) - In London Borough of Redbridge
Queen's Hospital (NHS Hospital mortuary) - In London Borough of Havering
East Ham Mortuary (London Borough of Newham) - In London Borough of Newham

The Eastern District of London Coroner's Service covers 5 London Boroughs - Waltham Forest, Newham, Redbridge, Havering and Barking and Dagenham.

To provide facilities for the receipt and storage of bodies under the jurisdiction of H M Coroner, H M Coroners Act 1988 and Coroners Rules 1984
To assist Forensic Pathologists with autopsies
To provide facilities for the viewing of bodies
To provide information and advice
To be an integral part of the Emergency Service with its Major Incident Procedures in conjunction with the Police, HM Armed Forces and the Health Authority
