Education Development Plan

Education Development Plan (2004-2005 update) - April 2004|

We continue to be wholly committed to raising standards in education and ensuring that all children benefit from these higher standards.

We were delighted that this commitment, and the progress that has come over the past decade as a result, was recognised nationally when in April 2003 we were awarded Beacon Council status for 'Transforming Secondary Education'.

This gave us an opportunity to share best practice with other authorities, much of which is contained within this Education Development Plan.

Although attainment results for 2003 in the primary phase (Key Stages 1 and 2) remained relatively static, results improved in all subjects at Key Stage 3. Outstanding progress was made at GCSE with 49% of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSEs graded A* to C.

This improvement, 7 percentage points improvement on 2002 results, was the second highest in London and the 6th highest nationally.

The 2004-2005 update of the Education Development Plan (2002-2007) sets out how we will continue to make progress in each of the 8 priority areas. It is a requirement that the Education Development Plan is updated annually to include new targets and details of activities to be pursued during the year under each of the priority areas.

Reference has also been made to the Green Paper Every Child Matters as we are preparing our own response to the requirements of the new legislation.

We are confident that the strategies and plans for continuing improvement set out in the Education Development Plan provide an excellent basis for all partners to work together for all children and young people in the borough.
