If you want your next role in local government to be one that actively encourages you to come up with creative solutions to some challenging issues, then take a close look at Barking and Dagenham Council.
Located in the heart of the Thames Gateway, a huge transformation of the borough is currently underway, driven by our and our partners' ambitious agenda for growth, change and improvement.
The borough faces some big challenges. It has the lowest skills base in the country and high long term unemployment - ironic for a borough on the edge of a world class city and in the affluent south east of England. A priority for us is therefore to break the cycle of low skills/low pay cycle which affects other aspects of social life.
Partnership working is essential for us, because we cannot deliver our ambitious agenda for the borough by ourselves. This means working closely with partners in the borough including the police and Primary Care Trust, and external partners such as Communities and Local Government and the London Development Agency, so we can bring in additional resources and skills.
Projects currently underway include rolling out the partnership's neighbourhood management initiative across the borough; taking forward the £200 million transformation of all secondary schools through the Building Schools for the Future; and boosting the level of skills of the borough's workforce.
We also put a great emphasis on colleagues coming up with creative solutions. There are huge challenges but there are also huge opportunities, which is why the right creative and innovative solutions can have a big impact.
This approach is delivering solid results for the people of Barking and Dagenham. Education results are up - the gap between the performance of local pupils and national exam results is narrowing; our Adult Social Services team is now 3 stars and the 11th highest performing in the country; and overall we are 3 stars and 'improving well' according to the Audit Commission.
Rob Whiteman, Chief Executive of Barking and Dagenham Council says:
"This is a tremendous place to work. There are huge opportunities and we have a pivotal role to play to provide community leadership and build effective partnerships.
"We are creating the conditions where residents have the opportunity for steady employment and secure housing, so they can face the future with confidence. We want our colleagues to be innovative thinkers who can deliver real benefits for the community, as well as developing their own skills and abilities.
"If you believe you are ready for the challenges we can offer you, and have the right skills, experience and attitude that we need, then I do hope you will apply for a role with us."
