Healthy Schools
The National Healthy Schools Programme has 4 principal aims:
- To help to raise pupil achievement
- To help to reduce health inequalities
- To help promote social inclusion
- To support children and young people in developing healthy behaviours
The Programme is funded by Department for Children, Schools and Families and Department of Health, with a regional and local network. By 2009, the government wants every school to be working towards achieving National Healthy School status. Every Local Education Authority and Primary Care Trust already has a local Healthy Schools programme to support schools in reaching this target.
To achieve Healthy School status, schools are asked to demonstrate how they meet minimum standards in relation to aspects that include Personal Social and Health Education, healthy eating, physical activity and emotional health and wellbeing.
In achieving National Healthy School Status, a school can demonstrate how it's contributing to improving children's health and learning, and contributing to the delivery of the 5 national outcomes for children as described in Every Child Matters. Working with other partners, a healthy school can address issues its pupils face in the context of the local drive towards improving outcomes for children.
