Children's Services

Eligibility Criteria

Like most other Children's Services Departments, Barking and Dagenham are having to balance increasing demands for services with limited resources available to us to meet the needs of our service users.

In the past we have tried to provide some service to most people. However, this has meant that we were not fully meeting the needs of those people in the community who needed the most support or assistance needs.

In order to put this right, we need to make sure that service users with high support or assistance needs and their carers receive services that meet them. To achieve this we will be targeting our services to those in greatest need and at highest risk by using Eligibility Criteria.

What are eligibility criteria and why do we need them?

As there is a huge demand for help and care services in the borough, we must prioritise in order to make sure that the people in most need get help.

Assessment and service eligibility criteria will be used to inform us who will be a priority for different levels of assessment and who will receive services from us.

In this way, services will be directed at those in greatest need and at highest risk.

Eligibility Criteria will assist our care managers to reach difficult decisions in a way that is Open, Fair and Consistent.

This means that some people might not receive a service from Children's Services, although we will if possible suggest other ways of getting help.

How will it all work?

There are 2 stages to deciding who will get help and what sort of help that will be. The first stage is the Assessment and the second is about Service Provision.

If you are not satisfied

If you are not satisfied with the assessment or any aspect of the service you receive from us, you should first speak to your social worker or their manager.

If you remain dissatisfied, you may wish to make a complaint, please write to the Children's Services Complaints Manager, Children's Services Department, Civic Centre, Rainham Road North, Dagenham, RM10 7BN or fill out the online form.
