Domestic violence

It may be difficult to recognise or accept that you or someone you know is living with domestic violence. This section should help you to identify if you, or someone you know, is experiencing domestic violence, and help you to find support.

It also provides information on the impact domestic violence has on children, the different forms of domestic violence, and breaks down some of the myths that surround domestic violence.

Domestic violence is any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are, or who have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. This definition includes violence such as female genital mutilation so-called 'honour' crimes, forced marriage, and acts of gender-based violence.

Domestic violence happens across all communities, faiths and cultures. Most often, domestic violence is committed by men against women, but it also happens in gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender relationships. Sometimes women abuse men. Sometimes other family members may be involved.

Domestic violence accounts for 22% of notifiable offences in Barking and Dagenham, and therefore poses a serious concern in our community. This is a societal issue with highly detrimental and destructive consequences that must be exposed and addressed.

We are committed to working in partnership with statutory and community organisations to prevent domestic violence and reduce the harm it causes to individuals, families and the community as a whole.
