Independent (Training) Living Scheme

The independent living flats give service users the opportunity to live independently. Service users experience what it is like to live alone and have the opportunity to try out new skills and learn more about their strengths and needs relevant to independent living.

Service users can stay in the flat for a relevant period of time, that is assessed regularly in accordance with their needs. Rent is paid on a weekly basis and with the tenants responsible for payment of all regular household utilities.

Service users are provided with the necessary level of support according to their individual needs. This will include support with daily living tasks and daytime activities such as housework, shopping, cooking, laundry and paying bills.

Most people who have stayed in the Independent Living Flat have gone on to obtain their own tenancy and continue to live independently. The flat was the first step to their independent lifestyle.

Independent flats

These properties are accessed by service users as a member of the general public would. They may be council, housing association or privately owned properties.

Who is the service provided to?

The Independent Living Scheme aims to offer a service to adults who are registered as having a learning disability, who either currently live independently or are aiming to do so in the near future.

Age range

18 - 64 years.

Who is eligible for the service?

Commonly, the service user must be registered as having a learning disability and have an up-to-date care plan and core assessment. Care Management will make a referral and subject to staff/placement availability and following a relevant matching process, a service will be offered.

How is the service accessed?

By referral from the Learning Disabilities Care Management team. Following referral, the service user will meet directly with an allocated case manager who will oversee an agreed package of support and provide sessional support as required, as stated in a service agreement.

Is the receipt of the service time-limited?

No. However, the service is needs-led. Reviews will be held and service provision will reflect the individual service user's needs.

Capacity

The Independent Living Scheme is community-based, often with the support provided within the service users home. The staff are employed on a sessional basis and therefore capacity is not an issue.
