Traveller Liaison
Responding to Travellers in our Community
Our aim is to provide essential services to the travelling community in the borough.
We do that by:
- Providing a Traveller Liaison Officer to be a single point of contact for unauthorised travellers and the agencies that service them
- Working closely with the Police and other agencies
- Identifying service needs in the travelling community
- Evicting unauthorised travellers from public land
- Providing advice and an eviction service to land owners
- Providing an official Gypsy Site
What you can expect if you contact us about unauthorised travellers:
- We will provide advice and information about our services
- We will investigate all allegations of nuisance behaviour, dangerous and roaming animals and rubbish dumping
- We will ensure that all instances of criminal behaviour are made known to the Police
- We will respond within 24 hours to reports of traveller incursions on public land and share that information with the Police
Traveller encampments will not be tolerated on:
- Land used for essential health or emergency services
- Land used for educational purposes
- Country Parks
- Land previously targeted by travellers, which cannot easily be secured and which has resulted in substantial economic cost for that land owner/user
Tolerance period
There will be a 48 hours tolerance period of the travelling group on other land open to the public unless:
- They have previously abused our tolerance
- They fail to maintain reasonable standards on the site
- They fail to cooperate with us; or
- There is an increase in crime
More about us
We also operate an Animal Welfare service to investigate loose and dangerous dogs, and respond to animal welfare issues.
