Noise and Nuisance
Our aim is to control and reduce noise and nuisance in the borough.
How we meet our aims
- We investigate sources of nuisance including noise, rubbish on properties, derelict and empty properties, smoke from bonfires, smells and problems with private drainage
- We provide a fast response services that also operates out of hours to investigate noise and other emergency nuisance complaints
- We evict unauthorised travellers from public land, and offer advice to private landowners
- We aim to make sure that animals in the borough help to improve people's quality of life

What you can expect if you contact us
- We will keep your details confidential
- Our Business Support Team will give you general advice and help and will pass all relevant information to an officer for investigation
- We will give advice and information about our services and what you can do to help yourself
- We will send you a fact sheet that gives you advice on how to solve your problem
- We will respond to any significant daytime nuisance within 2 hours, and within 1 hour for late night nuisance. The initial response may be by way of a telephone call from the investigating officer to determine whether the problem is still occurring
If you tell us about a matter which is not urgent, a Noise and Nuisance Officer will contact you within 2 working days and may make an appointment to visit you.
What you can expect if we investigate a complaint
- We will stop excessive domestic noise affecting other people
- We will stop bonfires and other sources of nuisance smells
- We will adopt a zero-tolerance approach against people who deliberately and carelessly get rid of their rubbish. This also applies to people who allow their dogs to foul our public places
- We will act to stop neglected buildings and structures spoiling the enjoyment of neighbouring properties
- We will use our powers to enforce pest control
- We will investigate and sort out private drainage problems
- We will keep you informed and let you know when we have finished our investigation
Night Time Service
We operate a night time service for the investigation of noise. The hours of operation are:
- Sunday to Thursday, 8pm - 2am
- Friday and Saturday, 7.30pm - 4am
