Housing Standards

This team enforces standards in properties which are owner-occupied or privately rented.

This includes providing advice, assessing fitness for habitation, handling repairs grant enquiries, identifying empty properties, inspecting and registering houses occupied by more than 1 household (houses in multiple occupation) and dealing with disputes between landlords and tenants.

The team also produces quarterly tenant and landlord newsletters and operates a landlord's forum. Future initiatives include an accreditation scheme for rented sector properties.

In partnership with Hanover Housing this team provides advice and support to help home owners over the age of 60 with repairs and improvements that enable them to remain in their own homes. Staff at Hanover Housing offer a high level of support to clients and help with completion of forms, selecting builders and overseeing work.

A Best Value review of Private Sector housing was completed in 2000-2001. It was inspected by the Housing Inspectorate in January 2002.
