Barking and Dagenham, along with Redbridge and Havering, have established the '3 Boroughs Accredited Accommodation Scheme'. This scheme has been introduced because improving Health, Housing and Social Care is an important Community Priority for our borough.
Many of our residents rely on others to provide them with housing accommodation. The Councils accept that they have responsibilities for ensuring that this accommodation meets at least, legal minimum standards. Ideally it should meet higher standards.
Many people do not know what those minimum standards are. Because of that they may unwittingly be living in homes that are unsafe or are damaging their health. Similarly, because they are not aware of requirements, landlords may be letting unsafe property, so exposing tenants to unnecessary risks.
We are aware that confusion may arise as a result of the application of different standards in neighbouring authorities. The creation of this Partnership is an initial step in overcoming that situation.

Please note: Admission to this Accreditation Scheme is voluntary and although the councils administer it, they cannot intervene in disputes between landlords and tenants.
