Housing

Squatters and unauthorised occupants

A squatter is a person who occupies land or property to which they have no legal title.

Empty Council properties are usually awaiting repair, redecoration or re-letting and we are keen to ensure they stay empty so that someone on the waiting list has the opportunity to find a home.

If you live in a council property and you see anyone who appear to be squatting in a property, please contact your local estate office who will deal with the situation.

Please remember that squatters do have legal rights and to use force to remove them from a property is illegal.
