We have launched a Good Motor Trader Scheme to help consumers in the borough know where they can expect high standards when buying, servicing, or repairing a car.
The scheme is a partnership between Trading Standards, which receives a high number of complaints about the motor trade each year, and local businesses, who have welcomed the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to fair and honest trading.
Between 1999-2002, Trading Standards officers received 888 complaints connected to the motor trade. Of these, 492 were regarding second-hand vehicles; 197 regarding servicing and repairs; 175 regarding new vehicles; and 24 regarding spares and tyres.
To be accepted into the Good Motor Trader Scheme, businesses must pass a series of checks, which examine their business practices, vehicle records and training methods. Traders must be seen to be complying with consumer protection laws; must only advertise in a way that's clear and truthful; and must have an effective customer complaints procedure.
Traders who meet these standards will be entitled to display the Good Motor Trader Scheme logo on their premises and in their advertising. They will also be entitled to free advice on Trading Standards laws; a free advice and arbitration service from Trading Standards officers when resolving customer complaints; free inclusion in the scheme's advertising and publicity; and opportunities to attend networking forums.
The first businesses to subscribe to the scheme are Boleyn Garage, C.S. Motors, and Toho Motors. More businesses are expected to sign-up over the coming months.
If you are interested in subscribing to the scheme please contact Ron Olive at the address shown.
Consumers who would like any other kind of advice regarding purchases made in the motor trade, are welcome to contact Barking and Dagenham Direct.
