Licensing

Liquor

The Licensing Act 2003 amalgamated 6 previous licensing regimes covering the sale and supply of alcohol, the provision of regulated entertainment, the provision of late night refreshment and replaced them with a single system of premises licences.

Previously people wishing to sell or supply alcohol went to the Magistrates Court to obtain a Justice's Licence and they would apply to the local authority for their other licences including public entertainment.

Under the Licensing Act 2003 there was a transitional period between 6 February 2005 and 6 August 2005 for premises to convert their Justice's Licence to a premises licence under the new regime.

After the 24 November 2005 when the Act went live full control of granting and revoking of licences became the responsibility of the Local Authorities.

A premises that wish to supply or sell alcohol requires a premises licence along with someone with a personal licence to authorise the sale of alcohol to become a Designated Premises Supervisor.

Please note: When applying for a personal licence you must apply to the local authority in the area that you live.
