Good hygiene is important in making sure the food you serve is safe to eat.
If you own a business, it makes good business sense to practice good hygiene because it will prevent food poisoning, protecting your reputation with customers.
We have a duty to enforce food hygiene legislation in premises throughout the borough. Just as important as enforcement is the work we do to promote good health by providing advice and support to businesses.
The Food Standards Agency is the body, which provides definitive advice on food hygiene to businesses and the public.

We investigate food poisoning and certain other food borne illnesses to prevent the spread of illness within the community and to try and establish possible causes. Advice is also given to patients on how to prevent the spread of disease within the home.
We carry out regular checks on all food premises without prior notification to ensure the public is protected and that high standards are maintained.
The Food Safety Act 1990 and regulations made under it make it an offence for anyone to sell or process food for sale which is harmful to health.
Running a food business means that you have a particular responsibility in protecting the health of your customers.
