The General Food Regulations 2004 (
PDF) and the Food Hygiene (England) Regulations 2006 require that all food on sale is safe to eat and is applicable to all food businesses from manufacturers and distributors to caterers and retail shops.
There are over 1,200 food premises in Barking and Dagenham including 14 food manufacturers. Our Food Safety Team is responsible for ensuring that food sold in the borough is safe, clean and fit to eat.
The Food Safety Team is involved in:
Monitoring hygiene in food premises|
Infectious disease investigations|
The Authority is also required to enforce specific hygiene rules for products of animal origin such as meat, milk, egg and fish product premises under the European Regulations 852/2004, 853/2004 (
PDF) and 854/2004 (
PDF).
