The Equality Standard is a national auditing framework against which all Councils assess their progress on equalities and diversity policy and practice. It is based on 5 levels, level 1 being the lowest of achievement and Level 5 the highest.
We have achieved level 2 of the Equality Standard and is striving to achieve level 3 by 31 March 2006. The Equality Standard for Local Government at level 3 requires all departments to formulate Plans that contain equalities and diversity objectives and targets. Action on these have already commenced and all plans will be closely monitored and progress periodically reported to councillors, chief officers and the local community.
As part of this, it is also necessary to make the Departmental Equalities and Diversity Plans available to the public, community stakeholders and service users for purpose of consultation and scrutiny.
