Sustainable Development

What is sustainable development?

Sustainable development is a very simple idea.

'It is about ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and for generations to come.'

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), 2002.

This means that sustainable development is about achieving economic growth and community development, while protecting and improving the environment, for now and in the future.

Sooner or later, a damaged environment will hold back economic growth and lower the quality of life. We must make sure that these economic and environmental benefits are available to everyone, no matter what their race, age, sex or social background.
