Low carbon options appraisal of Barking town centre regeneration

In 2005, we commissioned a Low Carbon Options Appraisal (PDF logo PDF 1.40M) to investigate options for reducing the environmental impact of the regeneration in the town centre.

This study illustrated that community heating and combined heat and power provide the most cost effective way for Barking Town Centre to become a low carbon community.

The study therefore recommended an area wide heating network - served by the waste heat from Barking Power Station - complemented by visible, building-integrated renewable energy systems.

This strategy will deliver a 32% reduction in carbon emissions from new developments beyond Building Regulations 2006 (the low carbon heating network will deliver a 22% reduction with the remaining 10% delivered by on-site electricity generating renewable technologies).

Barking Power Station waste heat

The preferred low carbon heat source for the heating network is Barking Power Station which is located approximately 5 kilometres away at Dagenham Dock.

Barking Power Station could potentially produce enough waste heat to supply 150,000 homes (subject to modification to the existing power station being made and an extension approved).

The transmission of heat from Barking Power Station to the town centre via a heat pipe is currently being investigated.

Barking and Dagenham benefits from a number of other potential energy sources due to its location beside the Thames and its industrial facilities.

For example, a combined heat and power plant could be built to cleanly capture the energy from waste arising's at the Jenkins Lane Mechanical Biological Treatment Facility operated by Shanks East London or from waste wood collected from across London.
