Environmental Sustainability

Green activities in your community

There are many ways in which we can all get involved and contribute to making our local communities more sustainable.

Big green map

The Big green map is a resource that can be used by anyone interested in environmental projects, organisations, places and schemes in the borough. It maps out where they are located and highlights ways in which you can participate in green activities around the borough.

Big green borough day

Big green borough day is the borough's annual environmental festival. It takes place during London Sustainability Weeks in June and showcases local groups and organisations involved with environmental issues. There are also fun activities for adults and children alike such as trying out wacky bikes and going to the solar circus.

Cleaner and Greener Community Group

The Cleaner and Greener Group is a voluntary network of residents and environmental groups who meet to take action, learn and discuss environmental and sustainable development issues which affect everyone in the borough.

Fairtrade

We are now working towards Fairtrade status. The purpose of becoming a Fairtrade town or borough is to contribute to the Fairtrade Foundation's aim of tackling poverty by enabling disadvantaged producers from poor countries to receive a better deal, through encouraging support for the Fairtrade Mark throughout the UK.

Secondary School Awards

We develop and run a secondary schools award on environmental issues every year.

Recycling schemes

We run a weekly recycling scheme as well as a range of other recycling services, such as composting bins and green waste collections. Dedicated web pages on recycling will provide you with information on all these services.

Volunteering scheme

London Wildlife Trust Volunteer Group helps manage the green spaces in Barking and Dagenham and residents who enjoying working outdoors can join.

Parks and nature reserves

The borough is fortunate to have a wide range of parks, open spaces and nature reserves to explore and enjoy. Our Local Biodiversity Action Plan will tell you about the locally protected species and habitats in the borough and the efforts we are making to protect the borough's flora and fauna.

Allotments

The borough has 14 allotment sites where residents can rent an allotment and grow their own fruit and vegetable as well as meet fellow gardening enthusiasts. Not to mention improve their health!.

River walks

Residents and visitors alike can also enjoy the borough's river courses and canals.
