The environmental competition for secondary schools is run every year for Year 9 geography pupils, and gives young people a chance to explore a wide range of topics such as the quality of our environment, waste and recycling, energy use, transport, biodiversity, and consumer choices.
Through their projects they learn about how they can make positive differences to their local and global environment, whilst also developing their research, presentation, and group work skills.
The winners of the 2005 competition were Eastbrook Secondary School and students Esin Guven, Lauren Wooding, Danny-Boy Hatchard, and Michael Rees who won £2,000 for environmental improvements in their school.
They were keen to make Dagenham 'a nice place to live' and had thought of some good ideas about how the prize money could be spent, including making a small wind turbine and installing power-saving lights.
Students Julian Onyelekere, Shay Carroll, Samantha Blower, and Daryl Fenton from Jo Richardson Community School came a close second earning their school £1,000. Their topic was fair trade, and through drama sketches they brought fair trade issues to light, and persuasively encouraging the audience to buy Fairtrade products.
Prize money is now being spent on environmental improvements within these schools for example on renewable energy and an organic garden which will grow healthy fruit and vegetables.
Environmental education is a key priority in the Barking and Dagenham Partnership, and is part of the action plan for making the borough cleaner, greener and safer.
This competition is being jointly run by the School Improvement Service (Children's Services Department) and the Environmental Sustainability Team (Regeneration Department).
