Street Warden Service

Barking and Dagenham

The Street Warden Service was launched in the borough to stamp out environmental crime and work with the community to promote pride and respect for our streets and public spaces.

Street Wardens are here for you and they work to ensure the provision of an excellent service to residents, businesses and visitors to the borough.

Wardens have now been allocated wards to enhance the service and facilitate working closely with the Council's Neighbourhood Management staff.

The work they undertake consists of dealing with service requests received through Customer First and carrying out pro-active patrols to tackle litter, dog fouling, fly-tipping, graffiti, and fly-posting.

In addition, they participate in major projects aimed at tackling and preventing environmental crime - examples being the Council's Graffiti Charter which is aimed at helping small businesses in maintaining their premises free of graffiti, and the Anti-Cigarette Butt Litter Campaign.

Two of the team also act as Dog Wardens, who tackle dog nuisance problems caused by strays and fouling of public places.

The service plays a key role in assisting in reducing overall street crime levels and the fear of crime, by maintaining a strong presence on the streets and working closely with the Police and Safer Neighbourhood Teams.

All of the wardens promote positive social behaviour and citizenship through educational visits to schools.

The Street Wardens also work closely with the other Council services, in particular, the Parks Police, Community Safety and Street Cleansing.
