Fear of Crime

*based on April 2004 to March 2005 victim and crime data provided by the Metropolitan Police.

Just as important as tackling crime itself is taking measures to ensure that people feel safe on the street and in their homes. We want to make Barking and Dagenham safer in ways that meet the needs and concerns of all sections of the community; in order to achieve this we will work with our partners to reduce crime and the fear of crime.

Even though the chances of a resident becoming a victim of a crime is very low, residents are asked not to become complacent and should always look at ways of making sure precautions are taken! Please visit our crime prevention pages for extra advice on how to remain safe.

What Barking and Dagenham is doing

Following the Audit of Crime, Disorder and Drugs a Borough wide consultation took place that fed into the Crime, Disorder and Drugs Strategy, which was published in March 2005.

The Fear of Crime Group, which is made up of representatives from all the partner agencies from the Community Safety Strategic Partnership was created. The group is tasked to meet the targets set in the strategy to reduce the fear of crime across the borough.

The Chair of the group and a senior police officer member of the group are also members of the Home Office's Fear of Crime Forum.

With match funding from the Metropolitan Police and the groups own funding recent initiatives have included.

For more information on the work of the Fear of Crime Group in Barking and Dagenham please contact Mavis Harris.
