Children with Special Educational Needs

Frequently asked questions

What can I do if a statutory assessment or statement is not agreed?

If we decide not to start the assessment, you have the right to appeal to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal.

If we decide not to issue a statement, we are likely to issue a 'note in lieu'. You have a right to appeal to the Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal. The Barking and Dagenham Parents in Partnership can help you decide what to do.

What is a note in lieu?

A note in lieu describes the child's needs and makes recommendations about the best way he or she can be helped in school.

It uses the information collected during the assessment to suggest a package of help and support for your child and his or her school.
