Children can only be safeguarded properly if the key agencies work effectively together. Local Safeguarding Children Boards are designed to help ensure that this happens. They will put the current Area Child Protection Committees on a statutory footing.
The core membership of Local Safeguarding Children Boards is set out in the Children Act 2004, and includes local authorities, health bodies, the police and others.
The objective of Local Safeguarding Children Boards is to coordinate and to ensure the effectiveness of their member agencies in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children living in their area.
Guidance on Local Safeguarding Children Boards has been published, covering their role and operation, including their relationship to other Children's Trust Arrangements on the Every Child Matters website.
The statutory regulations, which came into force on 1 April 2006, are available from the Office of Public Sector Information website.
As from June 2006, Children's Services launched the Local Safeguarding Children Board website. This provides an online resource for Local Safeguarding Children Board members.
