Psychologists are trained to complete research. They can support schools and other professionals in developing research and projects to find out how support for children can be improved. An example of this might be working with a school to help improve the way they teach reading.
Psychologists believe that it is important for any recommendations they make to be backed up by evidence. They therefore keep up to date with recent information about the sorts of difficulties and needs they might be involved with, for example, literacy and behaviour. They also gain information about successful work in other places and share this with schools.
Recent project work has included joining with other professionals to try to improve children's attendance in school.
Psychologists are involved with projects that are initially suggested by local and central government. These include working with the Sure Start areas in the borough.
The Community Educational Psychology Service is currently involved, with other professionals in the authority, in thinking about the best way to help a child when their behaviour needs physical intervention to stop them hurting themselves or others.
The Community Educational Psychology Service is also involved in a project to identify the factors that reduce the risks to children in succeeding in education and to promote their resilience so helping them learn well at school.
Psychologists have also been involved in projects to help adults think about the best ways for children to give their views about the sort of help they need. We are also involved in developing the support available for children with Autism and helping children support each other more in school.
Psychologists are working with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service to help to improve the counselling service provided for young people.
