Assessment and intervention

 

Assessment process

Assessment arises from consultation and is a result of joint problem solving and decision making. All assessment is related to the application of appropriate interventions to help alleviate difficulties that children and adults might be experiencing.

 

Assessment often includes information gathering which can take a number of forms including:

Interviews conducted by a Psychologist will elicit the views of parents and carers, staff and young people and establish their perceptions about the problems they face.

 

Some psychology assessments such as Statutory Assessments of Special Educational Needs or contributions to assessments within the common Assessment Framework must be completed within defined timescales.

 

Some assessments relate to specific requirements such as exam special arrangements and need to occur at specific times.

 

Intervention

Psychological intervention focuses on the promotion of a child or young person's development. This includes raising attainment and promoting social inclusion and emotional well-being at the individual and organisational level.

 

Psychologists are able to offer support with the setting up, monitoring and development of interventions often with the aim of empowering others to oversee the implementation.

 

Examples of areas of intervention:

 

Thinking, learning and study skills

Teaching approaches, literacy, numeracy and other learning programmes, promoting self-esteem and motivation, developing thinking and study skills, language and communication development and social use of language.

 

Personal, social, emotional and developmental

Solution focused approaches, anger and stress management, relaxation techniques, assertiveness training, cognitive behavioural approaches, personal construct psychology, emotional literacy.

 

Organisation/School management and pupil care

The establishment and development of:

Anti-bullying strategies, friendship and self esteem groups, social skills groups, staff problem solving / support groups, parent support groups, conflict resolution approaches, peer mediation, tutoring and counselling, nurture groups, management of classroom behaviour, handling bereavement positively, critical incident response.
