Community Educational Psychology Service to Early Years

Working with Young Children

The Community Educational Psychology Service works with young children and their families, Early Years and Childcare providers and other Professionals to promote positive progress through early identification of additional needs, planning interventions and supporting transition into school.

The service works with pre-school children and their families following a notification from the Health service or request for consultation from Early Year's providers or other services involved with the child. Any direct family work carried out is case related.

Psychologists work closely with other Early Year's services for example Early Years and Childcare which includes Portage and Early Support and Educational Advisory Services for children who have a hearing or visual loss.

Psychologists also link with Professionals in Health including the Child Development Team, Speech and Language Therapy Service, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy, Social Care and Voluntary agencies, to promote collaborative work.

- Improving the Foundation Stage - promoting learning and language skills
- Children's Centre and Sure Start local programmes - promoting early identification and support for additional needs
Contributing to the Early Years and Child Care Training Programme
Contributing to the development of integrated services for children in the early years

Psychologists input into Children's Centres and Sure Start Local Programmes

Psychologists work collaboratively with staff in Children's Centres to:

Facilitate positive behaviour management workshops for parents and carers
Link with Health Visitors and Community Nursery Nurses to support early identification and intervention for young children who have developmental delay
Provide multi-agency consultation to support children with additional needs and their families
Support language and learning project for children in the Foundation Stage
Provide training for staff on Inclusion for children with a range of additional needs
Support national developments such as extended services in and around school and the Common Assessment Framework
